About “Emilia's Shape Hunt”
- Ages: 2-5
- Length: 5 min
- Season: Learn with Emilia, story 6
A treasure map leads Emilia around the house to six hidden shapes: a circle clock, a square window, a sandwich cut into triangles, a rectangle door, a star sticker and, at the end of the hunt, the treasure: a heart-shaped cookie.
A rainy morning indoors turns into a treasure hunt here, with a map that sends Emilia from room to room. Every shape on her list is hiding inside something ordinary, the kind of thing your child walks past every day. When a shape is found, its outline glows over the object while the narrator counts corners, sides or points, so a child learns why a square is a square and not just what to call it. The rectangle page sets it beside the square: two long sides, two short. The prize at the end is something to eat, and Emilia splits it with Pip.

Tips for grown-ups
- Run your finger along each glowing outline with your child, counting the sides or corners out loud.
- Start your own shape hunt right after watching. Clocks, windows, doors and plates are good places to begin.
- At lunch, cut a sandwich corner to corner and ask what shape each half is, just like on the triangle page.
- Hold a napkin next to a door or a book and compare a square with a rectangle: which sides are long, and which are short?
- Count the five points on a star with your child's fingers, then give a high five like the narrator does.
Talk about it
After watching, ask:
- What shape was the clock?
- How many sides does a square have?
- What shape was each half of the sandwich?
- Where was the star?
- What was the treasure?
- Who did Emilia share the cookie with?
Try this together
Hide paper shapes around one room and draw a simple map with the same shapes on it. Your child follows the map, finds each shape and names it, and the last stop holds a hug or a snack.

Read the story
One rainy morning, at home, what a surprise:
a treasure map! Emilia could not believe her eyes!
Six shapes to find, all around the house.
Let's hunt for them, as quiet as a mouse!
First on the map: a circle, so round,
with no corners at all, like a ball on the ground.
Tick, tock! What shape is the clock on the wall?
A circle! Round, with no corners at all!
Next on the map: a square. Four sides, all the same,
and four corners! One, two, three, four. What a game!
What shape is the window, with the rain on the glass?
A square! Four sides, all the same! Top of the class!
Next on the map, a triangle: three sides, three tips.
Then snack time! A sandwich... lick your lips!
Cut corner to corner. What shape is each half?
A triangle! Three sides, three tips! What a laugh!
Next, a rectangle: four sides, like a square,
but two long and two short. Where is it? Where?
The door! A big rectangle, as tall as can be!
Two long sides, two short sides. Open it and see!
Next on the map: a star, with five points that shine.
Where could it be?
On the fridge! A star sticker, all sparkly and fine!
Let's count the points: one, two, three, four, five!
Five points, like your fingers! High five!
Last on the map: a heart, the shape that means love.
She looked down below, and she looked up above...
and there, on a plate, was the treasure: oh, my!
a heart cookie! The very last shape! Mmm! Let's try!
She broke it in two: one for her, one for Pip.
Crunch! And Pip winked at you, with a crumb on his lip!
Circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star, and heart!
Six shapes, all found! Now, that was smart!
Your turn! What shape is it? Let's play!
What shape is the ball?
A circle!
What shape is the window?
A square!
What shape is the sandwich half?
A triangle!
What shape is the door?
A rectangle!
What shape is the cookie?
A heart!
And what shape is the sticker?
A star!
You know your shapes! Hooray for you!
Six shapes, and a treasure! Let's stand up and play!
It's time for a happy, happy learning day!
Then over to her backpack, where the pins all go:
a pin full of shapes! Click! Look at it glow!
Six pins on her backpack! Is she proud? Oh, yes!
Four more to go! What's next? Can you guess?
Every day, there's something new to know,
and every time you learn, you grow, and grow!
Next time: where's Pip? Hide-and-seek! Bye-bye!
Questions parents ask
Is a square also a rectangle?
Technically yes: a square is a special kind of rectangle. For toddlers, the story keeps them apart by describing a rectangle as two long sides and two short ones, which is a fine place to start.
Is this a good rainy-day video?
It is set on a rainy morning at home and ends with an idea you can copy right away: a shape hunt around your own house.
