About “Where's Pip?”
- Ages: 2-5
- Length: 5 min
- Season: Learn with Emilia, story 7
Emilia and Pip play hide-and-seek. Is Pip under the bed? In the toy box? On the shelf? Looking for her sneaky bunny teaches six position words, and the viewer can see Pip hiding right behind her long before she does.
Hide-and-seek gives position words a real job to do. Emilia counts to ten and checks one spot after another while the narrator names each place: she finds a sock under her bed and a teddy behind the curtain before spotting Pip up on the shelf. In the second round the joke flips. Pip hides right behind Emilia herself, tucked behind her pigtails, so the viewer can see him while she searches next to the lamp and in front of the chair. Being the one who knows, and calling out where he is, is half the fun. A toy box game and a closing guessing game repeat all six words.

Tips for grown-ups
- Before Emilia turns around, ask your child where Pip is and wait for the answer in words: 'Behind her.'
- Copy the toy box game with a real box and a favorite toy: in, on, under, behind, in front of, next to.
- Give one-step directions that use the words, like 'Put the ball under the chair' or 'Stand next to the door.'
- Narrate where things go at clean-up time: books on the shelf, blocks in the bin, shoes under the bed.
- Play hide-and-seek with a stuffed animal and give clues with position words instead of hot and cold.
Talk about it
After watching, ask:
- What was under the bed?
- What was behind the curtain?
- Where did Pip hide the first time?
- Where was Pip the second time?
- Can you put your hand on your head?
- Can you stand next to a chair?
Try this together
Hide a stuffed animal in the room and give clues using the story's words, such as 'It's under something soft' or 'It's next to the door.' Then let your child do the hiding and give you the clues.

Read the story
Emilia and Pip loved to play hide-and-seek.
She covered her eyes. No peeking! No peek!
And while she wasn't looking, Pip hopped away,
to the very best spot for a hide-and-seek day!
One, two, three, four, five,
six, seven, eight, nine, ten! Ready or not!
Where did Pip hide? Where is his spot?
Is Pip under the bed, way down low?
No! Under the bed, just a sock... and a bow.
Is Pip in the toy box, with the blocks and the cars?
No! In the toy box: blocks, cars... and stars.
Is Pip behind the curtain? Let's peek. Is he there?
No! Behind the curtain, just a teddy bear!
Is Pip on the shelf, way up high?
Yes! There he is, on the shelf! Hi, Pip! Hi!
Again! Again! Let's hide once more!
She counted to ten, with her face to the door.
Shh! While she counted, Pip hopped... and hid,
right behind Emilia! Yes, he did!
She looked next to the lamp. No Pip there.
She looked in front of the chair. Not anywhere!
Where is Pip? Can you see him?
Behind her! Turn around, Emilia! Turn around!
She turned around... and there was Pip! Hooray!
He was behind her all along! What a sneaky way!
Now Pip is in front of her, nose to nose,
then next to her, cuddled up, cozy as cozy goes.
Then she played a game with Pip, and her big toy box:
Pip in the box! Pip on the box! Knock, knock!
Pip under the box... behind it... in front of it, too,
and Pip next to the box! Peekaboo, Pip! Peekaboo!
Your turn! Where is Pip? Let's play!
Where is Pip?
In the basket!
Where is Pip now?
On the chair!
And now?
Under the table!
Where is Pip?
Behind the box!
And now?
In front of the box!
Where is Pip now?
Next to the ball!
You found Pip every time! Hooray for you!
In, on, under, behind! Hip, hip, hurrah!
Hands up high, and sing it with me: Ta-da!
Then over to her backpack, with a hop and a skip:
a bunny pin! Click! A little pin of Pip!
Seven pins on her backpack! Is she proud? Oh, yes!
Three more to go! What's next? Can you guess?
Every day, there's something new to know,
and every time you learn, you grow, and grow!
Next time: what's the weather? Bye-bye!
Questions parents ask
Why can my child see Pip when Emilia can't?
That's the joke. Pip hides right behind her, so your child gets to be the one in the know and can call out where he is, which is a playful way to use the word behind.
What are position words?
Words that tell where something is, like in, on, under, behind, in front of and next to. Children use them to follow directions and to describe where things are.
