About “Who Said Moo?”

A guessing game on the farm! A moo from behind the barn, an oink from the mud, a quack from the pond... Emilia and the viewer guess who made each sound before every farm animal pops out. The last tiny squeak is a surprise.

This story is built for shouting out answers. Each farm animal is heard before it's seen: a sound comes from a hiding place, the narrator asks who made it, and there's a pause for little voices before the animal appears. That pattern of listen, guess, then check gives toddlers plenty of chances to be right, and an easy way to try again when they're not. Eight animals take a turn, then everyone comes out for one noisy chorus together. The very last sound is a small joke about Pip. A Your Turn round plays the sounds again, so there's another chance to guess.

  • moo
  • oink
  • quack
  • baa
  • woof
  • meow
  • neigh
  • cock-a-doodle-doo

Tips for grown-ups

  • Wait out the pause after each question. Let your child answer first, even with a wild guess, before the animal pops out.
  • Make the sounds yourself and let your child name the animal, then switch roles.
  • Add a movement for each animal: waddle like the duck, trot like the horse, flap your arms like the rooster.
  • When you meet a real animal, at a farm or just a neighbor's dog, listen first and guess before you look, like in the story.
  • Hide a stuffed animal under a blanket, make its sound, and let your child find it.

Talk about it

After watching, ask:

  • Who said moo?
  • Where was the pig?
  • Which animal said neigh?
  • Who stood on top of the fence?
  • Who made the tiny squeak?
  • Which animal sound do you like best?

Try this together

Play your own Who Said That? game: hide behind a couch or a door, make an animal sound, and let your child guess before you pop out. Then it's your child's turn to hide and make the sound.

Read the story

Down on the farm, on a bright sunny day,
Emilia and Pip came to visit and play.
But the animals were hiding! So listen with care,
and guess who is hiding... in here, and in there!

From behind the red barn came a long, low moo.
Who said moo?
A cow! A spotty cow said moo! Moo to you!

Down by the mud came an oink, and a squeal!
Who said oink?
A pig! A muddy pink pig, rolling round like a wheel!

By the pond came a quack, and a splish, and a splash!
Who said quack?
A duck! A duck, going quack, quack! In a flash!

From up on the hill came a soft little baa.
Who said baa?
A sheep! A fluffy white sheep! Baa, baa, ta-da!

By the gate came a woof, and a bark, bark, bark!
Who said woof?
A dog! A happy farm dog, who plays till it's dark!

From up in the hay came a sleepy meow.
Who said meow?
A cat! A cozy farm cat, waking up now!

From the stable came a neigh, and a clip, clip, clop.
Who said neigh?
A horse! A big brown horse! Trot, trot... and stop!

From the top of the fence: cock-a-doodle-doo!
Who said that?
A rooster! Good morning to you, and you, and you!

And then, something tiny went... squeak, squeak.
Who said squeak?
Pip! Emilia hugged him! Squeak! Cheek to cheek!

Then the animals came out, every one, in a row,
to say hello together! Ready? Here we go!
Moo! Oink! Quack! Baa! Woof! Meow! Neigh!
Cock-a-doodle-doo! What a noisy, happy day!

Your turn! Listen to the sound, and guess!
Who said that?
The cow! Moo!
Who said that?
The duck! Quack, quack!
And who said that?
The dog! Woof, woof!
Who said that?
The horse! Neigh!
And who said that?
The sheep! Baa!
Who said that?
The rooster! Cock-a-doodle-doo!
You know your animal sounds! Hooray for you!

Moo, oink, quack, and woof! Now let's sing,
and clap, and dance, and do the We-Know-It thing!

Then over to her backpack, for pin number five:
a little cow pin! Click! Moo! High five!
Five pins on her backpack! Is she proud? Oh, yes!
Five more to go! What's next? Can you guess?

Every day, there's something new to know,
and every time you learn, you grow, and grow!
Next time, Emilia goes on a shape hunt! Bye-bye!

Questions parents ask

Why does the narrator pause after each question?

The pause leaves room for your child to answer out loud, which turns watching into a conversation. It is worth waiting for the guess before the animal appears.

Are the animal sounds loud?

No. They are soft, cartoon-style sounds meant to be friendly for small ears.
